Every dietitian, nutritionist or nutrition clinic must have a website. It is your business card on the internet, it makes you the owner of your online image, helps you get more patients and makes your voice heard by other people.
In this article we are presenting five easy steps to have your own website.
Why a nutrition website?
Start with the simple question: why do I want a nutrition website? What do I want to transmit to the world? Do I want to be an authority, to get more clients or patients, to present my nutrition clinic or just to reinforce the trust of people in me? It is going to be your objective and based on it you will model the website.
Find a domain for your nutrition website
Pick something that’s very specific and that is easy to remember. A good idea if you are a dietitian or nutritionist might be to just use your name, like ameliamiller.com. If the domain is taken, try something like ameliamillerRD.com. But keep in mind that one day you might grow and you might want to open a nutrition clinic. If you use your name don’t expect the clinic to be named by you, unless you become a notoriety.
Aim for a .com domain or your country’s extension like .uk or .au. Forget about fancy things like nutrit.io or nutr.it, these are harder to remember and pronounce.
Usually your hosting provider will take care of the domain but this article can be useful if you want to buy it elsewhere. We had good experience working with EuropeRegistry (we’re not affiliated with them in any way).
Hosting for your nutrition website
This part can be hard when you have a big website but it is easy at the beginning and you can move your website anytime later. We suggest to pick a hosting with good support and security. You don’t want popups with Cialis ads on your website. And aim for a hosting that focuses on WordPress (more on this later). This article compares multiple hosting options. We worked well with SiteGround (no, it doesn’t mean “website is on the ground” and we’are not affiliated with them).
Install WordPress on your nutrition website
This is the trickiest part. WordPress is a CMS (content management system – a computer application that supports the creation and modification of digital content). This is the engine of your website. There are more CMS systems but this one is the most used (about 28% of the internet) and the easiest one to manage in terms of updates, themes, plugins and knowledge base on the internet. You can just search “how to do x in WordPress” and will find tones of documentation.
The hosting company should allow you to install WordPress in a few easy steps. If not, these are the steps (not recommended if you don’t have any technical experience):
- Go to https://wordpress.org/ and download it
- Unzip the archive
- Create a database in your hosting admin panel
- Connect to your hosting with a FTP software like FileZilla
- Upload the content of the unzipped archive on the server
- Access your domain and follow the setup wizard
Find a theme for your dietitian website
Now you have a platform that you can build on. Is time to give that website a nice looking. There are a lot of free WordPress themes on the internet but since it’s going to be your image we recommend you to invest $40 – $60 into a professional theme. In this case ThemeForest is your friend. Use their search until you find a theme that you like. Download the theme, go to your website’s admin panel (in case you don’t remember it, it is www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin, go to the Appearance section, Themes, Add New and Upload the theme. After you have the theme installed you should find the configurations of the theme on the left menu or under the Appearance section.
Look for the “documentation” folder inside the theme and open the index.html file in that folder. You should find all the details about the theme in that file. Our recommendation is to install the demo content and to start from there, it’s much easier to visualize when you have some content.
Configure your dietitian website
The last step in this process is to create the menus (we covered more in this article), write some compelling copy for your website and start promoting it. Stay connected because we will present some interesting and unusual ways to show you how to promote your website and how to drive traffic to it.
Alternatives to this process: wix.com and wordpress.com (might cost more if you want some advanced features and does not give you the sense of ownership).
Since you expect to increase the number of clients, why don’t you take a look at Nutritio – a platform that will save you a lot of time and help you stay in touch with your clients?
